Students fare well at Oklahoma American Indian Challenge Bowl

Students fare well at Oklahoma American Indian Challenge BowlStudents from Shawnee High School, in their first year of competition, won first place at the Oklahoma American Indian Challenge Bowl. The event was held on March 26, 2008 at the Gordon Cooper Technology Center in Shawnee. Thirteen teams from across the state participated in the competition. Shawnee fielded two.

Team B, “The Royal Tribe,” encountered hardship early when they lost to Sand Springs High School in two tie-breaker rounds. They went on to defeat Colbert High School, but ultimately fell to Norman North. Students competing for Team B included Tyler Langley, Tracy Carter, Thomas Tiger, Mekko Jones and Kelsie Fixico.

Team A, “The Nations,” defeated two teams from Ada, and both Morris and Norman High Schools en route to the championship. Captain Aja Tainpeah led fellow students Preston Goombi, Will Watts, Numu Tomahsah, Lauren Deere and Adam Ramirez to their first place victory.

Coaches for the two Shawnee teams were Jessica Deere, Yvonne Honeyestewa and Tewanna Edwards.

The Oklahoma American Indian Challenge Bowl was sponsored by the Oklahoma Council for Indian Education. The OCIE advocates for Native American students, sharing effective educational strategies that address their unique cultural and academic needs.
